Gen Z Travels PLUS: Fiji – Bula Vinaka Adventure | Culture, Climate, and Connections

Connect Deeply. Travel Consciously. Lead Boldly.

What if one adventure could shift your entire worldview? What if a few weeks in Fiji could inspire a lifetime of purpose, connection, and impact? If Fiji were a starting point for your Adventure Gap year?

Gen Z Fiji isn’t just about seeing the islands—it’s about becoming part of them. Designed for young travellers ready to dive deep into cultural exchange, sustainability, and personal growth, this backpacking-style expedition offers an unforgettable way to explore, learn, and contribute.

Why is this for you?

We know Gen Z wants more than a typical vacation or GAP experience. You want purpose-driven travel—adventures that are authentic, ethical, and rooted in real connection. Gen Z Fiji delivers:

  • Live the Culture
Stay with the Mataqali Natiliva community of Nanumi Au. Share meals, stories, and daily life while supporting local projects. You’ll learn first-hand how Fijians foster strong community ties and live in harmony with nature.

  • Backpack With Purpose
This isn’t a resort tour. It’s an immersive, low-impact journey through Fiji’s villages and coral coast. You’ll travel mindfully, follow Leave No Trace principles, and engage with local communities in meaningful, hands-on ways. Learn about food literacy and sustainability by working alongside Fijians in gardens, kitchens, and coastal farms. Participate in eco-building projects that strengthen local resilience and climate adaptation. Each day is grounded in community connection, cultural respect, and reciprocity, allowing you to experience the vanua — the deep relationship between people, land, and spirit — and to leave Fiji better than you found it.

  • Immersive Adventures
Go beyond postcards and resorts to discover the real Fiji through full immersion in its islands, oceans, and communities. Paddleboard through winding mangrove forests, hike the volcanic highlands, and dive into crystal-clear reef ecosystems. Earn your scuba certification while learning from local marine guides about coral restoration and ocean conservation. Experience the best of Fiji the way few ever do: by living it, not observing it. Phones are set aside here, giving you the rare gift of time and presence to connect with people, place, and purpose truly.

  • Neuro-spicy and Progressive Minds Welcomed
Our adventures are designed to adapt, support, and empower young adults who are neurodivergent, creating environments where everyone can learn, lead, and thrive. We also welcome those who walk the talk when it comes to progressive values: climate action, gender equality and identity, Indigenous rights, and putting people before profit. And, yes, neurotypicals are welcome too!

Gen Z Fiji is for the curious, the courageous, and the community-minded.
It’s for those who want to belong, not just visit, and who believe that travel should change both the traveller and the world for the better. Ready to pack your bag? Want to interview us while we interview you to ensure this is the right experience for you

Why Fiji?

Fiji is quickly becoming one of Oceania’s most inspiring destinations for young people seeking purpose-driven travel and meaningful global learning experiences. It’s a place where culture runs deep, landscapes inspire awe, and community connection defines every day.

The Suncoast region, just north of Nadi, offers a side of Fiji that few visitors ever see—raw, authentic, and full of heart. Here, you’ll find sun-drenched villages, coral-fringed shores, and people who live closely with the rhythm of the land and sea. It’s the perfect setting for Gen Z travellers who want more than sightseeing—they want connection, contribution, and growth.

During this 8-day overnight journey to a remote island, you’ll experience the very best of Fiji: paddling across turquoise waters, sharing meals sourced from the land and ocean, joining local conservation and community projects, and learning from the Fijian philosophy of vanua—the sacred bond between people, place, and spirit.

Every moment invites you to step out of your comfort zone, disconnect from your phone, and reconnect with what truly matters—community, purpose, and the power of presence.

Why Take a Gap “Kickstarter” Experience?

For generations, young people have ventured into the world to grow through experience—to find themselves, connect with other cultures, and explore new perspectives. But today’s Gen Z isn’t just looking to travel. You’re searching for meaning, authenticity, and belonging—a break from the noise to rediscover what matters.

That’s what Fiji offers. Space to breathe. A chance to unplug. And a raw, real-world classroom where life teaches the lessons.

Why This Matters for Gen Z

This experience is built for Gen Z—young people navigating an era defined by uncertainty, climate change, and the urgent need for global collaboration.

Through experiential learning, cultural immersion, and outdoor adventure, you’ll gain:

  • Confidence to lead and adapt in a rapidly changing world

  • Practical tools for building sustainable, resilient communities

  • A sense of purpose grounded in both personal growth and collective responsibility

This is more than travel. It’s a launchpad for empowered leadership and lifelong impact.

Matty Devenish is a private practice therapist who founded Vancouver Counselling and Wellness (VCAW) almost a decade ago.  Counsellors at VCAW specialize in working with youth and young adults and their families.  After 20 years of working with youth in many different settings, it is clear to Matty that taking young people around the world to have these experiences is truly transformative.  Matty led his first trip in 2025 to Ecuador and saw the profound impacts on this GenZ group, on their sense of themselves, their lives and their stories.   The partnership between VCAW and Fireside Adventures is unique and powerful.  Please reach out to Matty directly at info@vancouvercounsellingandwellness.ca for more info on GenZ trips in 2026.

A very unique partnership between Vancouver Counselling and Wellness Centre and Fireside Adventures. Together, we offer a World Bound Adventure experience that blends outdoor adventure with counselling support to help young people re-imagine their identity, life story, and personal journey.

What is Plus? What Exactly Is Re-Authoring Through Adventure?

Are you—or is your young person—feeling stuck, anxious, or aimless? This trip is for you. It is a truly life-changing experience that offers new ways of seeing yourself in the world, helping you move forward with greater confidence and momentum.

We all move through life with a sense of who we are and an internal story about our identity and what life holds for us. When we are stuck, these stories can become painful or unhelpful versions of ourselves and our future. But here’s the key thing: these stories are not fixed or permanent. Through exploration with helpers in our lives—counsellors, mentors, coaches, youth workers, and others—we can begin to examine the story we are telling ourselves and intentionally shift it toward a more preferred, empowering version. This is the re-authoring process. But Why Adventure Too? When we feel stuck, we often remain in our comfort zone, finding it difficult to push ourselves toward the changes we want to make in life. Unfortunately, very little change happens inside the comfort zone.

Adventures like World Bound – Gen Z PLUS create opportunities to step beyond what feels familiar and have new experiences of yourself that actively support the new story you are beginning to tell about your life. This is a crucial part of the process. You see, we need good evidence to support a good story. We need to thicken the plot and deepen character development in order to hold onto meaningful change. For example, imagine hiking a 3,600-metre volcano—something we did in Ecuador in 2025. Although incredibly challenging, that experience can become powerful evidence that you are capable, strong, resilient, and able to persevere and complete difficult things.

Those lived experiences help anchor a new story—one that is grounded in real action, real effort, and real growth.

It's a Life Changing Experience
