August 6, 2018 – Whitehorse Takhini Hot Springs Hostel

  • Arrival to Whitehorse (9am to 5pm)
  • Tour of Whitehorse
  • Airport pick-up and drive to Takhini Hot Springs Campground
  • Fireside instructor greet incoming group at Whitehorse Airport
  • Introduction of staff and overview of canoe trip
  • River expedition orientation and gear check
  • Welcome ceremony and dinner
  • Visit Takhini Hot Springs

August 7, 2018 – Whitehorse, Takhini Hot Springs Hostel/Lake Laberge (TBA)

  • Pack up food for expedition (review food sensitivities and allergies)
  • Understanding the roles of leaders and followers
  • Ice breaker activities
  • Outdoor cooking lesson and food management
  • Unpack personal gear (again) and group gear recheck
  • Essential knots to know
  • Yukon River canoe trip overview
  • Essential safety lesson and protocols
  • Half-day practice of paddle strokes
  • Free time in Whitehorse
  • Campfire

August 8, 2018 – End of Lake Laberge start

  • Early wake up, eat and pack up for Lake Laberge
  • Unload canoes, review canoe strokes, safety procedures, loading of canoes, lunch
  • 'River Ceremony' before we start
  • Short paddle to campsite

August 9 – 17, 2018 – Lake Laberge to Carmacks to Dawson City

  • Practice strokes throughout the expedition
  • Paddle through Five Fingers and Rink Rapids sections
  • Visit Sam Magee's ashes
  • Campsite management
  • Outdoor Leadership 101 & 102 - Guiding principles of leading out-trips, weather reading, river navigation lesson, map reading and orienteering
  • Yukon River history and geography
  • Exploring and visiting old cabins
  • Visit to Fort Selkirk
  • Explore old ruins of towns during the gold rush days
  • Half day hike
  • Solo
  • Panning for gold

August 17, 2018– Arriving into Dawson City, Gold Rush Campground

  • Shower up
  • Tour the town and visit historical places
  • River graduation dinner

August 18, 2018 – Whitehorse, Takhini Hot Springs

  • Pack up & breakfast in Dawson City
  • Lunch on the road (6-hour road trip back to Whitehorse)
  • Set up, clean gear
  • Graduation dinner

August 19, 2018 – Homeward Bound

  • Pack up and shuttle to airport for departure

Yukon Explorer youth leadership camp

Hey Youth!  Hey You!

You know what happens when you mix awesome youth, a Yukon River canoe trip, the everlasting midnight sun and outdoor leadership training together? We know you'll have a larger than life experience when you come with us to the Yukon.

As part of Fireside’s Explorer Youth Leadership Camps, this 14-day youth leadership summer camp offers the ultimate summer experience combining adventure camp, leadership training and some serious fun for youth like you. 

The problem is you might be nervous to attend because you don’t have enough information about leadership and the Yukon. You might be worried of being disconnected from your social media or peer groups. Well keep reading and ask us questions. We are here to listen and you through the process.

Program Details

Date: August 6th to August 19th, 2018
Ages: 13 to 16 (Co-ed)

Winter Rate: February 16th to March 31st 2018 $2499.00 CDN plus 5% tax.
Spring/Summer Rate: April 1st 2018 onwards $2899.00 CDN plus 5% tax

Deposit: $350.00 (required to secure registration) per registration.

Includes: pre-camp assessment, instruction, food, accommodation, most camping gear, camping fees and transportation while on trip. Does not include flight and some optional activities.

Locations: Whitehorse, Takhini Hot Springs, Lake Laberge, Yukon River and Dawson City

Important information: We rent sleeping bags, camp chairs and thermarests for those needing extra comfort
